Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke on the Kathua and Unnao rape cases, at an event in London. While addressing a gathering at ‘Bharat ki Baat, Sabke Saath’ organized in Westminster’s Central Hall in London, hosted by Prasoon Joshi, PM Modi condemned politicising of heinous crimes like Rapes and Sexual Assaults. “When a child is raped, do we compare metrics versus earlier governments? That is shameful. We cannot say there were these many rapes in our government and that many of yours. There cannot be a worse way to deal with this issue,” said PM Modi during the event. He affirmed that a rape is a rape and “how can we tolerate this exploitation of our daughters,”
PM Modi expressed his strong condemnation in the backdrop of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua and Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao rape case. An 8-year old girl was abducted, assaulted, raped and killed which had gained public outcry across the nation. Another rape case of Unnao where a 17-year old girl was allegedly raped in June 2017 by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and no FIR was registered by the police. The MLA, however, denies the accusations and expressed conspiracy against him.
In the meanwhile, the rape victim’s father was allegedly killed during judicial custody which led to the suspension of over 8 police officials including the DSP rank of police officials of Unnao. The case has now been transferred to CBI and the investigation is underway. The celebrities and internet influencers condemned the rape cases, on twitter and sought stringent action against the convicts.
PM Modi asked the audience why a family gets worried when their daughter doesn’t return late night but the same family seem less worried for their son’s whereabouts. He said that the sin of rape is committed by someone’s son and it is our responsibility to give right knowledge to the sons of the nation.
