WHAT IS PILES?

Hemorrhoid, commonly known as piles is a chronic disease. And though many people suffer from it, its symptoms are not always obvious. It is a condition in which collection of tissues and veins swollen and painfully sore or inflamed.

These are hemorrhoidal veins located in the lowest part of the rectum and the anus. They act as a cushion to arterio venous channels and the tissues connecting to the intestines. These veins in most cases swell stretching the vein walls cause them to become thin and irritated.




CAUSE:

This is a very common condition with about 50 per cent of people experiencing it. This condition can occur in any person at any age. Although, extreme abdominal pressure is believed to be the main cause, researchers have not been very certain about what exactly triggers this condition. TYPES AND STAGES:

Piles can be of two types; external and internal and vary in sizes.

Internal hemorrhoids are usually of 2-4 centimeters, located far above inside the rectum. They are more common and won’t hurt for there are only a few pain sensing nerves in the rectum. The only sign of them being present can be bleeding.

External hemorrhoids are the more severe kind and lie within the opening of the elementary canal. They are often itchy, very uncomfortable and painful if a blood clot is developed. In such a condition a person may require immediate medical treatment.

Hemorrhoids can be classified into 4 stages:

Initially, hemorrhoids are small inflammations inside the lining of the opening and are not visible.

During the second grade, their size start increasing but is not visible.
They may get pushed during the bowel movement but return unaided with time.

If the condition continues to worsen, it leads to prolapsed hemorrhoids. In this stage, hemorrhoids start appearing on the outside of the opening but can be re-inserted.

In this stage, hemorrhoid appearing on the outer edge of the opening cannot be re-inserted and needs immediate medical treatment. As they are much larger and extremely painful they may also bleed.
