The alleged Unnao rape case where an 18-year old village girl has accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar for raping her, has shown a ray of hope for justice. The latest update in the case is that Unnao police officials have registered an FIR against Sengar under various IPC sections, ANI reported. As per the report, the FIR includes sections 363 (Kidnapping), 366 (Kidnapping, Abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage, etc.), 376 (Rape), 506 (Criminal Intimidation) and POSCO act. The case is transferred to CBI for further investigation and the arrest of the accused MLA will then be decided.

The rape had allegedly taken place in June 2017 and the victim and her family was since then trying to get an FIR registered against the accused BJP MLA. The alleged killing of victim’s father in police custody on April 9 brought outcry among the people from every walks of life.

The FIR in the case was, reportedly, decided to be registered after Sengar made an appearance before Lucknow police chief to state that he has no role in the rape or the death of victim’s father. The death of victim’s father under police custody has already been transferred to CBI for further investigation. Earlier, the DSP ranked police officer was suspended for the irresponsible handling of the complaints by the rape survivor and her family. 2 other police officials and 4 constables were suspended after victim’s father’s death in police custody, for negligence and dereliction to perform their duty diligently.

Allahabad High Court on Wednesday took suo-motu cognisance of the alleged gang rape case and expressed it’s hearing of the case before chief justice division bench of High Court on Thursday. The NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) has also taken cognisance of the alleged killing of victim’s father under police custody. The commission, reportedly, stated that there seems to be violation of human rights in the victim’s father’s death in police custody. The commission has sought a detailed report, within 4 weeks, in the case including the actions taken against the delinquent police officials who didn’t register the FIR in the case. An SIT (Special Investigation Team) was formed on Tuesday to investigate the case and submit the report. However, the case seems to now be investigated by CBI.
