Uttar Pradesh is no alien to rapes. However, what shocks us more is the way the police handles rape cases in UP. In the latest development, an 18 year old who says she was allegedly raped last year in June by a legislator of Bhartiya Janata Party tried self-immolation in front of the CM Yogi Adityanath’s residence on Sunday. She accused an MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar from Unnao district. She also blamed the Unnao police on not taking any action or registering a complaint against the accused and said that her family was being threatened when trying to file a complaint.
In the most recent development, the father of this rape victim reportedly died in the hospital on Monday morning.
Pappu Singh, the father of the 18 year old rape victim was, reportedly, arrested after he was allegedly beaten up by Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s brother on April 5. The father was admitted in the district hospital on Sunday night after his complaint of abdominal pain. He reportedly passed away in the hospital on Monday morning. This happened after the father was, reportedly, beaten up by the MLA, his brother, and his associates last Tuesday but the police on the contrary filed a complaint against the father and arrested him.
“The incident happened while the man was in judicial custody. Magisterial inquiry will be conducted. If there have been lapses by the police, action will be taken,” Deputy Inspector General of Police, Pravin Kumar said.
Moreover, “Two police officers and four constables have been suspended, while four accused of beating the rape victim’s father have been arrested,” said Unnao Superintendent of Police (SP), Pushpanjali Devi.
Ravi Kumar NG, District Magistrate said that he awaits the postmortem report which will ascertain the cause of the death.
The Chief Minister of UP, Yogi Adityanath has finally passed a statement on this incident. He said, “This is an unfortunate incident. I have spoken to top police officers in Lucknow. Those found guilty will not be spared and the government will not show any leniency,”
When Kuldeep Singh Sengar was asked about the incident, he denied these allegations calling it a political conspiracy against him and that he is ready to face punishment, if found guilty.
