Are Indians Inclining More Towards Hook–up Culture Than Serious Relationship?
India is a melting pot of cultures and probably hook-ups, blind dates, living ins, and casual sex are the newest ones in the list. While this is the dating scenario almost everywhere, yet there are young couples who are in deep serious relationships with the end goal of marrying each other.
In the 21st century, when everything from our food choices to clothing is changing, how can love pattern remain the same. Earlier, love was something that happened after marriage. Brides and grooms didn’t even see each other’s face before the wedlock. Things evolved gradually from not even seeing each other to meetings and phone calls before marriage, and eventually the concept of love marriages creeped in.
In those days, love meant long talks over the phone hiding away from parents, blushing while looking at each other from different corners of the class, gifting chocolates and flowers and holding hands under the bench. With the increasing influence of western culture through movies and TV shows, love has lost it’s innocence in India. Relationships became more common and you could see even school going children having their sweet romance.
Breakups and rebounds are becoming everyday affairs and marriage is no longer end goal of getting into a relationship. Hooking up is becoming a new norm and your unwillingness to participate makes you unfit for your friend circle. A hook-up generally means getting into numerous sexual encounters without any expectations of serious relationships. While few years ago, pre-marital sex was a big thing, now-a-days, sex usually happens either before or without any relationship. Sex, nowadays is only about physical pleasure sans any emotions. Hook-up culture has become dominant in the recent years and our youth is welcoming it with open arms because it involves less drama, no commitment and is more convenient.
Due to the paucity of time, young couples can’t give each other time and attention and a serious relationship requires a lot of it. Short term flings and casual sex, according to the youth, makes life easier and physical needs are met without any emotional drama. This cultural shift is not wrong, it’s just different from our age-long culture, which is why it is difficult for our parents to accept it so easily.
