PM Modi Retaliates on Triple Talaq, Said Hindu Men Too Go To Jail For Offences

The Modi government has drafted Muslim Women Protection of Rights in Marriage Bill 2017 and since then, the bill is being argued upon and opposed too. The bill proposes 3 years of imprisonment to any Muslim husband for divorcing his wife by pronouncing "Talaq" thrice.

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known for his aggressive speech and retaliation in his own witty way. One more instance of a befitting reply to Congress and other opposition parties by Modi was seen on Wednesday in the Rajya Sabha. PM Modi was responding to the debate on various issues in the Rajya Sabha on the Motion of Thanks for the President’s address. He could be seen as witty and sharp as anyone in the Rajya Sabha when he was scathing the Congress party and other opposition parties on various issues.

One of the issues that he spoke about is Triple Talaq. He slammed Congress party and other opposition parties for obstructing the Triple Talaq bill. He responded by saying that a strange argument is being screened that men of a particular community will be jailed and this will hamper their family. He said that Hindu Men too go to jail for the offenses that they commit and there might be discomfort for that reason.

He also admonished the opposition on blocking the bill for OBC Commission. “Look at what all you mocked – Swachh Bharat, Make In India, Surgical Strikes, Yoga Day. You are free to mock as you please but why are you blocking the bill on OBC Commission? Why are you blocking Triple Talaq bill? Are you not sensitive to the aspirations of OBCs?,” questioned PM Modi.

The Modi government has drafted Muslim Women Protection of Rights in Marriage Bill 2017 last year and since then, the bill is being argued upon and opposed too. The bill proposes 3 years of imprisonment to any Muslim husband for divorcing his wife by pronouncing “Talaq” thrice.

While the bill was cleared in Lok Sabha, it couldn’t clear the Rajya Sabha as Congress along with other opposition parties demanded it’s review by a parliamentary committee. Some of the Congress legislators had argued that if the man goes to the jail, how would his family survive that he leaves behind. “If a Hindu married twice, he goes to jail. There should be punishment for him. You did not think how his family will survive,” responded PM Modi.

As of now, the bill is waiting for it’s clearance in Rajya Sabha and only time will tell us if it becomes a law. Even Supreme Court has called “Triple Talaq” illegal.
