Mumbai: Padmaavat or better yet formerly known as Padmavati as a movie has faced as many controversies as the original Queen herself. A movie by Sanja Leela Bhansali is based on the life of Queen of the Kingdom of Chittor, who was known for her exceptional beauty and her sense of justice.

While the movie is said to be honoring the Rajput pride and the Queen, controversies soon began even before the release of their trailer for some objectionable scenes in the movie. From Karni Sena wrecking the sets of Padmaavat, to also inciting violence against anyone who supported the release of the film. Karni Sena man-handled movie’s director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and vandalized cinema halls and openly threatened a high-intensity violence if the movie is released. The protesters allege that the movie distorts the Rajput history, glorifies a barbaric invader as a lover and a brave warrior (in reference to showing Khilji as Padmavati’s lover). However, the truth is far more complex and eminent, journalists have said that they haven’t found anything objectionable in the movie.

The movie which was supposed to be released in December, could not make its way to the theatres due to the threats and aggressive nature of Karni Sena. Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh banned the film even after it received certain cuts and the name changed from ‘Padmavati’ to ‘Padmaavat’.

The Supreme Court soon asked the State Governments to allow the release of the film. However, Karni Sena which has been on the forefront against the film release took a step further by vandalizing cinema halls while creating a havoc. The women of the community are protesting against the Supreme Court’s order, as they asked the Judiciary to either allow for a ban or allow them to give up their lives.

Amidst all these controversies, the entire cast has held strong. Eminent journalists, politicians, etc. have praised the Supreme Court for prioritising freedom of speech. The movie ‘Padmaavat’ will now hit the theatres across on January 25th.
