Mumbai: Its a wrap for the Gujarat assembly election 2017, as the BJP was once again successful in preserving their crown and being on the winning spree of power in the state for 22 years straight. The elections were feasibly the most awaited electoral of the year. Even though this year, the competition was quite cut-throat, the Congress was again left with being a runner up instead of being the winner.
Talking about the assembly election, it was a two phased event with the first phase being on December 9 and the second phase on December 14. A total of 977 candidates were contested in phase 1 and 851 candidates fought in the second phase.

Even before the result was declared, the exit polls of numerous news channels pointed a clean win for the BJP. Exit polls are one of the key players in elections, as they keep the audience engaged and anxious by predicting the outcome. Let’s take a look at what the different exit polls showed:
According to India Today, BJP was to win by 99-113 seats, leaving the Congress and others with 68-82 and 1-4 seats respectively.
Times Now showed BJP’s win by 113 seats and Congress 64
ABP polled for BJP, 117 seats and 64 seats for Congress
CNN’s exit poll for BJP showcased 125 seats and 57 for Congress
Zee News again went like others, with 99-113 seats for BJP and 68-82 for Congress.
The overall of exit polls gave 111 of 182 seats to BJP and Congress was left with 71 seats. If we take a look at the elections held in 2002, 2007 and 2012, the BJP was ahead of the Congress by gaining 49% vote share each time.
The result was not even a shocker as such, the original numbers were not much different than those predicted in the exit polls. The BJP might have won the power once again but this time, Congress gave a great competition and the win was just over the edge. If we look at the numbers, the BJP scored 99 seats, leaving the Congress with 77 seats and a single seat for others.
The BJP has not only gained majority support in Gujarat, it was also successful in winning the Himachal Pradesh by leading in 46/68 seats.
As celebrations begin for the BJP, here is what Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi said after the results;
Tweet from the Office of RG, “The Congress party accepts the verdict of the people and congratulates the new governments in both states. I thank the people of Gujarat and Himachal with all my heart for the love they showed me.”
