Issues in India to be addressed by PM Modi

Mumbai: With the recent cabinet reshuffle and expansion hogging the limelight and a new rejuvenated team in place at the Centre, one is hopeful of better governance of the country and the address to her numerous problems.

We bring you our view on the 5 important issues that require the PM’s immediate attention:

1. Water:

India is facing acute water scarcity and in the coming years it may develop into a crisis. The ground water consumption of India surpasses that of China and the US combined, with agriculture and domestic dominating consumption.

Moreover pollution in rivers and interstate and trans-border river conflicts and gross mismanagement by inefficient water body authorities at all levels, be it at the Centre, State or municipal level have compounded the problem.

2. Communal Tension:

The test of a good democracy is whether the minorities feel safe in the country. There is a clear indication that the communal tensions have increased amongst communities due to conflict of interest between the communal leaders. Although Prime Minister Modi has intervened in the Cow Vigilantism issues, the growing cases in cow vigilantism have created apprehension and distrust amongst the minorities. Thus the issue of communal harmony needs to be addressed by the PM as soon as possible.

3. Jobs – not Digitization nor Startups:

The PM should see to it that jobs that are lost on account of Digitization should be compensated by increasing job opportunities in other areas. A revamp of the MNREGA should be on the cards as well as impetus should be given for other labour intensive projects.

The huge amounts promised by the Govt. for startups which are mainly dotcoms and not brick and mortar establishments will not generate employment and will only serve as cosmetic make up and image building for the govt. This may fail in offering any solutions to the job problem.

4. Unutilized amount of the Swacch Bharat Cess -SBC:

The cess that was levied in the previous years as an addition to taxes is Rs 1.3 lakh crore or $ 26 billion.  41% of the cess is lying unused. This is a very serious issue which needs to be investigated and the Swacch Bharat program should be made more accountable.

5. Urban Poor:

The Urban poor people are the highly neglected ones, even though the numbers of those migrating to cities is steadily on the rise. The Housing for all by 2022 Mission which caters to slum redevelopment and low cost housing should be given top priority.

Also in tandem should be initiatives on urban poverty eradication and livelihoods creation for the urban poor.
