Asus Zenphone 3S Max Review

Mumbai: The Chinese smartphone maker Asus has brought a tough contender in the form of Asus Zenfone 3S Max against smartphones like Lenovo P2 & Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. The successor of Asus’ famous smartphone Asus Zenfone 3 Max, comes packed with 5000mAh Li-polymer battery which is it’s highlight feature. Asus has brought Zenfone 3S Max for those who need a powerful battery packed smartphone. With the market full of smartphones, consumers get one more option when they are looking for a decent camera with a powerful battery packed smartphone. Asus has been known for bringing something better in the newer version by playing around with the specs and showing the upgrade version no lesser than a premium quality smartphone. With the budget smartphone market getting intense with more and more budget smartphones launching every fortnightly, Asus has tried giving a tough fight to its competitors with few enhanced features in Asus Zenfone 3S Max. So let’s see what this budget smartphone has brought on table for us

Build & Design

Slightly hefty looking Asus Zenfone 3S Max primafacie looks premium in the Sand Gold color and entices you to check the phone by holding it atleast once. It does come in the black version as well but we got the Sand Gold colored Zenfone 3S Max to review and our experience was really ‘cool’ with this 5.2 inch display smartphone. Asus has kept in mind the legacy of gifting the sturdiness to this smartphone like in its predecessor Zenfone 3 Max. We found the look of this smartphone gaudy because of its finish and color proportion. Considering the fact that this smartphone comes power packed with 5000 mAh battery, we were expecting this smartphone to be heavy and bulky. Talking about the front view of this Smartphone, the front glass panel is very delicately rounded at the edges and the curve continues along the sides. This articulation in the design makes the grip around the smartphone comfortable and doesn’t bring discomfort to the ears while being on a call without an earphone. Asus has brought fingerprint sensor to the back and capacitive buttons to the front. It gives you the ease to unlock the phone rather than drawing the pattern all the time. The physical home button is rectangular with its corners slightly curved located below the screen. There’s a redundancy in the home button functionality due to the presence of on-screen navigation bar.

On the rear of Asus Zenfone 3S Max, you will find the rear camera slightly protruding out in a square shape curved at its corners. The smartphone weighs 175g which is slightly heavier than its competitors. Asus has tried it’s best to bring the premium finish to the look and the feel of Asus Zenfone 3S Max and at the same time, it displays solid and well quality built smartphone.

The screen shows decent sharpness and clarity while using or playing games. Asus Zenfone 3S Max sports a 13MP camera and a dual tone LED flash. The front camera has an 8MP sensor and has a wide angle lens to enable user take a group selfie. The camera quality is not that great but makes you believe in ‘itna paisa me itnaich milega’. The Zenfone 3S Max doesn’t have phase detection autofocus (PDAF) but we still found the camera quality bit satisfactory at this price.

The Zenfone 3S Max runs on the newest Android 7.0 Nougat but has stuck with a MediaTek chipset wherein the competitors have moved to Snapdragon 625 chipset in some of the budget smartphones. It’s predecessor was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 chipset.

 Asus Zenfone 3S Max Performance

We were very curious about the battery life of the Zenfone 3S Max due to the massive battery power it possesses. We started using this smartphone very heavily with multiple activities at the same time. The battery didn’t drain off that fast as we witness generally in a budget smartphone. However, we did find the back of the smartphone being bit of warming as the use continues. You can use this smartphone for one full day without much of refueling it oftenly. However, HD Video calling and Video Streaming may drain the phone faster and may drain off in around 4 hours. Noticeably, the phone did hang up for a while when too many applications were used simultaneously. We didn’t find any discomfort in holding the smartphone for use. The Zenfone 3S Max also has good resolution screen and sharpness. During the daytime, we were able to use the phone even in the hard sunlight without stressing our eyes too much as it doesn’t show the reflection that much. Talking about its Wi-fi, we found lagging in its Wi-fi connectivity. We struggled to connect Zenfone 3S Max with our office wi-fi which was weird. With regards to performance, the smartphone seems to perform on an average scale. You will criticise the Chinese brand Asus for the unnecessary inbuilt apps it brings to its users like Instagram Knock-off, ZenCircle, Zentalk, Zenfone Care, Mobile Manager, Gallery, MyAsus Service, etc.  are few to name among the others. You will hardly use any of these apps for your day-to-day use.

Ajanta Tech News’ Verdict

Asus Zenfone 3S Max is a super battery power smartphone which can be used for a longer period without the hassle of recharging frequently.
