Mumbai: With chanting of “Modi Modi, Modi Modi” by the BJP corporators inside the BMC hall, Shiv Sena candidate Mr. Vishwanath Mahadeshwar got appointed as Mayor of Mumbai. Vishwanath Mahadeshwar got elected as the new Mayor of Mumbai by the show of hands by the corporators present there.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had already cleared that BJP will not contest for Mayoral position and that Shiv Sena’s way is clear to appoint their own candidate for the Mayor of Mumbai. The decision came after Shiv Sena announced that it will not join hands with BJP for electing it’s Mayor. Also, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had said that he is exploring the option to end party’s alliance with BJP in Maharashtra and in the centre.

BJP, a party with almost equal number of seats won in BMC Election 2017, decided not to challenge Shiv Sena for the Mayor’s position. The speculation is that BJP knows that it has formed it’s government in Maharashtra and in Centre with Sena’s alliance and challenging Shiv Sena for Mayor’s post may act as a catalyst for intensifying the rift between the two allies.
In the BMC Election 2017, no party has got mandate of 114 seats off 227 total seats in the Corporation to get their own Mayor. The performance of BJP was best of all as it won 82 seats against its 31 in 2014 and Shiv Sena got 2 seats more than BJP’s. Now BJP is trying to soften the bitterness between the two parties post BMC elections but Shiv Sena is in no mood to show mercy. Off-lately Shiv Sena has joined hands with opposition against Fadnavis Government over Loan Waiver for farmers.
