PM Inaugurates World’s Tallest ‘Statue of Unity’, Congress Party Reacts

PM Modi attacked Congress party and opposition while ending with a question for people to answer. "I am amazed when some people of our own country dare to see this initiative from a political view and criticize us as if we have committed a huge crime. Is remembering the country's great personalities a crime?" PM Modi questioned opposition's attack on his initiatives for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

India got it’s world’s tallest statue in the form of that of freedom fighter and the man behind India’s formation, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. The statue got inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who remembered the great hero of India, Sardar Patel, and tagged the statue as a symbol of India which will be remembered by the youth forever. He said, “Events like today are very important in a country’s history and such events are difficult to erase. It is a historic and inspiring occasion for all Indians. I am fortunate to dedicate this statue of Sardar Saheb to the nation,” recalling Patel’s efforts for building India by uniting all the states ruled by theie respective kings. The 182-meter tall ‘Statue of Unity’ is built by ‘Swadeshi’ workers and craftsmen in three and a half years at an area of 20,000 sq.m. in Sadhu Bet Island surrounded by a 12 sq.m. artificial lake.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the historic monument to the nation on Patel’s 143rd birth anniversary which is coined as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day since 2014. Many dignitaries from his party and the BJP ruled states were present at the time of the inauguration. Some of them included BJP president Amit Shah, Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The cost for this historic monument is estimated to be Rs. 2,989 crores which has gained a mix reaction from people. Many suggested that this amount could have been used for building a university or a hospital while many appreciated BJP-government’s decision to build the Iron Man’s statue as this will mark India in the world to erect world’s tallest statue.

In his own witty way, PM Modi attacked Congress party and opposition while ending with a question for people to answer. “I am amazed when some people of our own country dare to see this initiative from a political view and criticize us as if we have committed a huge crime. Is remembering the country’s great personalities a crime?” PM Modi questioned opposition’s attack on his initiatives for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Another one to attack Congress party was Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chauhan. While taking a jibe at Congress party, he said, “Congress never gave due respects to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It forgot him, who unified India. I congratulate the Prime Minister that he unveiled the world’s tallest statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel today. That is the true tribute to him,” said Chauhan at an event in Madhya Pradesh. He went ahead to praise Patel’s efforts for uniting the country and said that Kashmir’s issue would have not existed had Patel been the Prime Minister in place of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Congress, on the other hand, attacked BJP and it’s alleged alliance Rashtriya Swayam Sevak (RSS) by a tweet attaching a cut out from a 1948 published newspaper. “Aaj agar Sardar Patel hote toh 70 Saal baad ek baat phir rashtrahit mein isi tarah ka kada faisla karte #SardarVallabhbhaiPatel (Had Sardar Patel alive, he would have taken another strict decision (of calling RSS dangerous for the nation)” read the tweet while the image attached read how RSS was called dangerous for the nation by Patel. The Congress party president, Rahul Gandhi, also followed the same path of wittily attacking Narendra Modi and his BJP party.
