In what is claimed to be “first in the Asia-Pacific”, a 28-year old woman from Vadodara gave birth to a “healthy baby girl” through a transplanted uterus on October 18 in Pune’s private hospital. The baby girl took birth through the same uterus which her mother took birth from. Yes, the doner of the uterus is none other than the baby’s maternal grand mother. The mother of the new born baby, Meenakshi Valand, had to go through a uterus transplant in May 2017 after her uterus went non-functional following a miscarriage. Her mother then stepped forward to donate her uterus to Meenakshi. After conceiving the child through In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), Meenakshi gave birth to a healthy and normal baby girl even after it was a premature delivery in the 32 weeks of pregnancy, claimed a report by ANI. “We are very happy. We had waited for this day for long,” said Mrs. and Mr. Valand, quoted ANI.
The doctor supervising the case, Dr. Neeta Warty, called this a first in the Asia Pacific as this has never happened ever before in this region. “Nine such transplants and deliveries have taken place in Sweden, two in USA and now this is the 12th in India,” Dr. Neeta Warty said, quoted PTI. The doctor claimed that the baby girl and the mother are safe and healthy. “Uterus was transplanted in May 2017 as it was not working after three abortions. We then transferred the embryo into her uterus, 32 weeks later, a healthy, normal baby was born today. This is the first baby out of a transplanted uterus in Asia-Pacific,” said Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar, Medical Director of the private hospital, to ANI.
This case is a ray of hope to many who fail to conceive child due to various uterus related issues. This miracle by science will definitely make it possible for many distressed women who fail to conceive child and stay deprived of the opportunity to become a mother.
