The Muslim women can now, under the ordinance passed by the Union Cabinet, fight legal battle against triple talaq (triple divorce) from their husband. The union cabinet on Wednesday, has approved the ordinance or an executive order on Triple Talaq being illegal in the nation. The Congress party had opposed the passing of the bill, raising concerns over the ‘criminalization’ aspect of the bill which worked as a hurdle in getting the bill clearance from Rajya Sabha. The BJP-led government had even offered revision to it but the Congress party was adamant. However, after the passing of the ordinance today, Congress party leader, Randeep Surjewala, accused BJP of politicizing the issue. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not making this an issue for justice for Muslim women, but is making this into a political issue,” said Surjewala on BJP’s success over the passing of the ordinance on criminalizing triple talaq in India.

BJP, however, accused Congress party of opposing the bill for their “vote bank politics”. “It is my serious charge with full sense of responsibility, that a distinguished woman leader is the ultimate leader of the Congress party, yet such a barbaric inhuman triple talaq curse was not allowed to be ended by a parliamentary law because of ambiguity and the vacillations of the Congress party,” alleged Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Law Minister on failed attempt to take Congress onboard against triple talaq.
Prasad was, reportedly, referring to Sonia Gandhi under the term “distinguished woman leader is the ultimate leader of the Congress party,” in his statement. Prasad was briefing media after the ordinance against triple talaq was passed by the union cabinet on Wednesday. He narrated his government’s ordeal of how he and his party, on the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met several Congress party leaders but “under the pressure of their vote bank” politics, Congress party refused to come onboard.
The BJP-led cabinet had to pass the ordinance after it failed to table the bill against triple talaq practice in the Rajya Sabha due to lack of consensus in the monsoon session last month. The bill did not get the opposition’s nod as they had concerns over several aspects in the bill, though BJP claims to have made changes to some of the aspects. Triple Talaq is a major issue, currently, faced by a section of Muslim women as mere utterance of the word ‘Talaq’ (divorce) three times ends a married life of a couple. Many shocking and astonishing cases came to a limelight after the bill against Triple Talaq was ready to be tabled in both the houses of the parliament. We still wait to see the ultimate resolution in the battle against triple talaq issue.
